PASAN Shuts Down Sokoto, Kano Assembly
Members of the Sokoto State Chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria PASAN has joined their counterparts on an indefinite nationwide strike.
Chairman of the association Mr Abubakar Yusuf, told newsmen in Sokoto that the move was an extension of their ongoing struggle that began since 2020.
It may be recalled that the association took similar action in 2020 which was later called off , following interventions from various sectors in the country.
Radio Nigeria reports that members of the association shut down the State House of Assembly complex.
"former President Muhammadu Buhari signed an executive order to secure the financial autonomy of the legislature and the judiciary which has not been implemented.
After resolving the legal complexities, the order was reaffirmed and the former president initiated a committee for its full implementation".
According to him, the progress was stalled following the transition of the previous government.
Yusuf added that the association had patiently awaited for government to fullfil its promises which have not been fulfilled up to now.
He explained that the association resolved to lock all State Assemblies, including the National Assembly indefinitely until their demands were met.
He added that the struggle was not solely for the benefit of the parliamentary staff, stressing that it is driven by a national interest.
Similarly, Members of the Kano State Chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria ( PASAN), shut down the state House Assembly, as they joined a nationwide strike declared by the union’s national body.
The chairman of the state chapter of PASAN, Bashir Yahaya, confirmed the closure of the Assembly while speaking to newsmen on Monday.
He explained that, the strike is over the failure of the state government to implement financial autonomy for its legislative arm.
“Yes, we have joined the strike as directed by the national president of our association."
Bashir explained that, the strike followed the expiration of an ultimatum the union gave to the government to implement financial autonomy for the legislature.
The PASAN chairman pointed out that, the union was patient for two years, after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Financial Autonomy Act, but state governors have failed to implement it.
He said the association would continue the strike until their demands were met.
Bashir hinted maintained that, the state Assembly would remain closed until there is a counter directive from the national body.
