 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. INEC Faces Challenges Ahead of Bayelsa State Elections


• Boat with 12 Election Personnel Capsizes in Southern Ijaw, SPO Abducted in Sagbama


In a recent press statement released today, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bayelsa State Office, disclosed challenges faced during the transportation of personnel and electoral materials to Registration Area Centers (RACs) ahead of the upcoming elections.


On Friday, 10th November 2023, a boat en route to Registration Area-17 (Koluama) in Southern Ijaw LGA capsized. Fortunately, all 12 election personnel and the boat operator were rescued, and no lives were lost. However, the incident resulted in the loss of crucial election materials, including result sheets, power banks, and personal belongings of the staff.


The affected Registration Area-17 has 5,368 registered voters, with 5,311 PVCs collected. Despite the setback, INEC is actively working to ensure the smooth conduct of elections in the impacted area.


In another unfortunate event, the INEC State Presiding Officer (SPO) assigned to Registration Area-06 (Ossioma) in Sagbama LGA was reportedly abducted while waiting to board a boat at Amassoma Jetty. Security agencies have been notified, and efforts are underway to address the situation.


Wilfred O. Ifogah, Head of Voter Education & Publicity, speaking on behalf of the Bayelsa State INEC Office, emphasized their commitment to overcoming these challenges and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
