 M23 says hundreds of Burundi soldiers captured in latest Congo offensive The Rwanda-backed M23 group has captured hundreds of Burundian soldiers during its latest offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a rebel official said, as clashes continued despite a warning from the Trump administration. Last week M23 entered the strategic town of Uvira near the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept". Rwanda denies supporting M23 and has blamed Congolese and Burundian forces for the renewed fighting. INEC Faces Challenges Ahead of Bayelsa State Elections


• Boat with 12 Election Personnel Capsizes in Southern Ijaw, SPO Abducted in Sagbama


In a recent press statement released today, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bayelsa State Office, disclosed challenges faced during the transportation of personnel and electoral materials to Registration Area Centers (RACs) ahead of the upcoming elections.


On Friday, 10th November 2023, a boat en route to Registration Area-17 (Koluama) in Southern Ijaw LGA capsized. Fortunately, all 12 election personnel and the boat operator were rescued, and no lives were lost. However, the incident resulted in the loss of crucial election materials, including result sheets, power banks, and personal belongings of the staff.


The affected Registration Area-17 has 5,368 registered voters, with 5,311 PVCs collected. Despite the setback, INEC is actively working to ensure the smooth conduct of elections in the impacted area.


In another unfortunate event, the INEC State Presiding Officer (SPO) assigned to Registration Area-06 (Ossioma) in Sagbama LGA was reportedly abducted while waiting to board a boat at Amassoma Jetty. Security agencies have been notified, and efforts are underway to address the situation.


Wilfred O. Ifogah, Head of Voter Education & Publicity, speaking on behalf of the Bayelsa State INEC Office, emphasized their commitment to overcoming these challenges and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
