Jigawa High Court Hands Down Life Imprisonment Sentence For Sodomizing ‘ALMAJIRI’ Pupils

In a ruling, the Jigawa State High Court situated in Birnin Kudu presided over by His Lordship Justice Musa Ubale, has sentenced Israfilu Sagiru, a 25-year-old resident of Zarena Village in Birnin Kudu LGA, of the State, to life imprisonment.

The Public Relations Officer of the State Ministry of Justice, Zainab Baba Santali in a statement in Dutse says the conviction stems from the heinous act of Rape, as defined in Section 3 (1) (e) of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPP) No. 02, 2021.

It explains that Mr. Sagiru was brought before the High Court on September 5, 2021, facing two counts of rape.

He was accused of luring and sodomizing two ‘almajiri’ pupils, aged 11 and 12, under the false pretense of providing them with new clothes.

The illicit acts involved unlawful anal intercourse with the minors.

During the trial, the prosecution presented three witnesses, including the defendant's confessional statement and the findings of a forensic examiner who conducted a medical investigation on the victims.

This evidence strongly supported the prosecution's case. In his defense, the defendant testified.

Justice Ubale, in delivering the judgment, declared that the State Ministry of Justice's prosecution successfully established all elements of the rape charges, Consequently, Israfilu Sagiru was handed a life sentence.

The judge expressed deep concern that the convict exploited the vulnerability and tender age of the victims to commit such a heinous crime.

He also urged parents to be more vigilant in protecting their children.

The Statement therefore, notes  that dissatisfied parties have a 90-day window to appeal the judgment.
