 Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." A report by a United Nations group of experts in July said Rwanda exercised command and control over the rebels. FG To restructure World bank funded women project

Federal Government has initiated a restructuring process for the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP) a World Bank funded project.

The Minister of Women Affairs Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye stated this in Abuja at a stakeholders meeting aimed at amplifying the programme reach.

Mrs. Kennedy-Ohanenye explained that the government’s intention to bolster the existing program, which has successfully empowered women at the grassroots level, is aimed to elevate women’s productivity.

“We are here to find a way forward to enhance whatever has been done before so that it will suit what the new government wants. We cannot change what is already working well, so all we need is enhance and expand it to work better.

The representative of the World Bank Nigeria, Taimur Samad said the organization would continue to assist Nigeria to uplift the livelihood of women and in other areas.

“For us gender empowerment is critically important and a big part of our portfolio and we are highly committed on delivering of those results and it has been very important part of our engagement with states and most of what we do in Nigeria is at the state level and we will continue with the collaboration at the federal and state

The UNICEF Deputy Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Rownak Khan expressed optimism that the collaboration would foster economic empowerment for women.

“Hopefully, this will become a catalyst for gender equality, breaking barriers and fostering sustainable development in Nigeria.

The Nigeria for Women Project stands as a pivotal, long-term partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Bank, aligning with the government’s overarching objective of promoting gender equality.

The implementation and roll-out project which started with six states across the geo-political would be extended to other states of the federation.
