GOV. SANWO-OLU COMMISSIONS SABO ULTRA-MODERN MARKET

… Charges Lagosians on Upholding Proper Environmental Sanitation

As part of the efforts of the present administration in making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has commissioned the Sabo Ultra Modern Market, Sabo-Yaba.

Speaking at the commissioning recently, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, urged citizens to preserve the newly remodelled structure, saying it is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also a crucial step toward maintaining people's collective health and well-being in the state.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the market stands as a beacon of progress, a symbol of resilience and a testament to the collaborative efforts that will continue to shape the destiny of the communities. He therefore charged all not to forget the importance of upholding proper environmental sanitation.

Speaking further, the Governor said the market has become a remarkable institution that has stood the test of time as an integral part of the community's history of over 70 years, offering a convenient alternative to the renowned Oyingbo Market and playing a pivotal role in driving commercial and trading activities within the area and its environments.

He added that over the years, the market has witnessed three re-development phases in response to changing dynamics of urbanisation driven largely by rising population. Sanwo-Olu said the need for a more accessible market led to the establishment of the Sabo market, filling a void for the Yaba residents who sought a convenient destination for their daily purchases and commercial activities.

He said further, “I am proud to celebrate with you the fourth transformation of this market, evolving from a Model Market into a modern marvel covering over 13,000 square metres of land and comprising 373 locked-up shops, 80 suites, and 111 key clamps. The Market also has other facilities including a car park, modern toilets, and a mobile health centre established by LASHMA, among others”.

He stressed that the project aligns with his administration’s vision of a #Greater Lagos which is fast becoming a reality, especially under the “M” pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus agenda which stands for making Lagos a 21st century economy.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Executive Chairman, Yaba Local Council Development Area, Mr. Omiyale Kayode Adejare stressed the importance of the market to the community as it will serve as a good alternative to the popular Tejuosho Market.

The Chairman said the people using the market before will still be the occupants of the shops available because before the re-construction started, they were brought on board and were given more preference in terms of allocation, cost, and also put in place the credit facility for some of the market women for easy allocation.

Speaking further, he said the local government had a good rapport with the market women and as such has agreed not to allow anyone to engage in street trading along the corridor of the market to maintain order, sanity and environmental sanitation in the market.
