 More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added.  Anambra government not in support of any form of hooliganism in transport sector---Transport commissioner

The Commissioner for Transport, Anambra State, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike has said that the State Government does not support any form of hooliganism in the transport sector.


She made this comment while speaking to commercial bus drivers from Onitsha who were protesting multiple taxation by touts.


The protesters, from Onitsha, Anambra State under the aegis of Egerten Drivers Association, Onitsha came in their numbers to the office of the commissioner at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka to show their displeasure on the multiple taxations.


The commissioner adviced them to go back to their base, and to never take the law into their hands while promising that she would have a meeting with the Internal Revenue Board and other Stakeholders.


She assured them that all the issues they raised would be taken to the Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.


The leader of the Association, Mr. Chukwuemeka Douglas said that after they have paid revenue which government said they should pay that touts would still come after them for the collection of 300 hundred naira for each trip they are making in the day.


He noted that some of their members were beaten up by the touts if they fail to comply.


Mr. Douglas added that on the February 20 and 21, 2024 that the drivers did not work as a drop out of the activities of these touts.
