 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. Two drown, many injured in Third Mainland auto crash


Two passengers have reportedly drowned after they fell into the lagoon from a commercial bus on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.

Other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries from the incident, The Nation learnt.

The crash occurred on Eid-el-fitri when Muslims are celebrating the end of Ramadan.

The Nation learnt that the driver of the 20-seater bus with number plate FKJ 872 YA was trying to avert plunging the vehicle into lagoon when the passengers fell off. 

Southwest Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Ibrahim Farinloye.confirmed the incident. 

He said a rescue team has commenced search-and-rescue operations.


Passengers thrown into lagoon as bus crashes on Third Mainland Bridge

A commercial vehicle (Danfo) carrying several passengers crashed on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Wednesday.

Confirming the incident, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said the impact of the accident threw two passengers, both adults, off an 18-seater bus into the Lagos lagoon.

Farinloye disclosed that personnel of the Marine Police are conducting a search for the two passengers, a male and female, who fell off the bus.

He further disclosed that the crash, involving the bus with registration number FKJ 872 YA, occurred by Adeniyi Adele axis inward of Lagos Island.

The NEMA official explained that the driver of the vehicle, who was on speed, swerved off the road and hit the bridge rails.

The impact of the crash forcefully pushed the two passengers off the bus into the Lagos lagoon.

“The victims, an adult male and female, are being searched by the Marine Police.

“The injured have been evacuated to a nearby hospital,” Farinloye added.
