GOV YUSUF ENGAGES IN HIGH-STAKES TALKS WITH KANO LAWMAKERS, KINGMAKERS AMID EMIRSHIP REVERSAL DRAMA.(PHOTO).

Gov Yusuf engages in high-stakes talks with Kano lawmakers, kingmakers amid emirship reversal drama

In a significant development, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has convened a closed-door meeting with members of the state assembly and key traditional leaders, believed to be kingmakers, at the Government House in Kano.

The focus of the meeting revolves around the anticipated assent by the governor to a bill recently passed by the state assembly.

This legislation passed on Thursday, seeks to reverse the creation of new emirates initiated by the previous administration led by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Should the governor endorse the bill into law, it is anticipated to pave the way for the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano, who was deposed in March 2020. However, the fate of Sanusi’s successor, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, remains uncertain at this time.

Emir Ado Bayero’s absence from the state adds a layer of intrigue to the unfolding situation, as he is reportedly out of town following a recent visit to the Awujale of Ijebuland.

The turbulent history between Sanusi and the Ganduje administration adds complexity to the proceedings.

Sanusi’s outspoken nature as Kano emir led to his removal in 2020, following the promulgation of the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law in 2019. This law facilitated the creation of four additional emirates, purportedly to dilute Sanusi’s influence.

The recent move by the Kano State House of Assembly to amend the contentious law underscores ongoing efforts to address the issues stemming from the 2019 amendment.

Majority Leader Hussien Dala emphasized the importance of ensuring fairness and justice in governing traditional institutions, a sentiment echoed by Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore.

The political landscape in Kano adds another layer of complexity, with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) now controlling the state parliament.

As the closed-door deliberations continue, all eyes remain fixed on Kano, where the fate of traditional leadership and the political landscape hang in the balance.
