FLOOD WREAKS HAVOC IN MAKURDI, RESIDENTS BLAME UNDERPASS CONSTRUCTION

22nd June, 2024

Residents of High Level in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, are counting their losses from severe flooding caused by heavy downpour on Friday.

DAILY POST gathered that the construction of an underpass in High Level contributed to the severe flooding that affected the area.

It was noted that businesses and sources of livelihood for people living in the High Level area have been negatively affected by the flooding, attributed to the negligence of Baahaus Global Investment, Nig. Ltd., the company undertaking the construction of the High Level Underpass in Makurdi.

Victims of the flooding alleged that the construction company blocked all water channels and drainages, thereby forcing water to enter homes and business premises in the area.

Several buildings around the construction site, particularly that of Elder Thomas Anyaregh located at No. 7 High Level Rd, Makurdi, were affected.

The entire building, which housed several business shops, was submerged in water.

Tenants affected include Tobias Ezenkwo, Vincent Nwakwo, Romanius Chukwuma Nkwo, Japheth Ochinawata, and Sylina Agwu (Lady J Computers).

Goods worth millions of naira were destroyed as a result of the downpour, which could not find its way due to the blockage of the drainage systems.

Speaking to newsmen, the landlord of the property, Mr. Anyaregh, clarified that he is not opposed to the construction of the High Level Underpass by the state government but strongly opposes the incompetence of the construction company, which has consistently refused to create adequate water channels despite repeated appeals.

He lamented that their inaction has completely ruined his properties and those of his tenants.

Elder Anyaregh, deeply incensed, vowed to seek compensation for the damages caused by the carelessness of the construction firm.
