Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years.  Don’t Protest Against Govt, Clerics Urge Youth

A prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Muhammad Kabir Haruna Gombe, has appealed to the youth to prioritise peace and avoid participating in the planned protest over hunger and insecurity.

Sheikh Gombe emphasised the significance of dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, urging young people to refrain from actions that could incite violence or chaos.

“Some individuals are using social media to mobilise Nigerians, especially the youth, for protests against hunger, fuel subsidy removal, electricity tariff hikes and insecurity,” Sheikh Kabiru Gombe said.

Highlighting religious teachings, Sheikh Gombe underscored the qur’anic and biblical principles advocating for peaceful responses to challenges.

“The Holy Qur’an and the Holy Bible both emphasise peace over chaos,” he stated, urging adherence to these principles in times of adversity.

Also, Sheikh Sani Yahaya-Jingir, the National Chairman, Council of Ulama of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’Ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), has cautioned Nigerians against engaging in public protests, emphasising that Islam prohibits actions that lead to chaos and calamity.

During a media interview in Jos, Plateau State, Sheikh Jingir said, “Allah detests chaos and calamity, and protests can lead to both. Therefore, I urge Nigerians, especially our youths, to reject any agitation for protests. Islam is above democracy, and it has forbidden protests; Allah has cautioned against any agitation for calamity.”

He advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the plight of Nigerians by reinstating fuel subsidy to alleviate the hardship quickly.
