LG Autonomy: S’Court Judgment Doesn’t Affect Delta –Gov Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has said that the Supreme Court judgement granting local government financial autonomy does not in any way affect the state.

Oborevwori said the state government did not tamper with funds belonging to the local government councils.

He said, “Supreme Court has given judgment. It does not affect Delta State Government. In Delta State, we don’t tamper with local government money. As we speak, the money for the local governments is still there. Almost N15billion is still there.”

Oborevwori made the assertion shortly after casting his vote in the ongoing local government elections in the state at Ward 6, Unit 33 in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area.

“I am a supporter of financial autonomy and as a former speaker, we’re at the forefront of financial autonomy for the legislature and the judiciary. I still believe in it,” he added.

Oborevwori assured Deltans that the ongoing election would be peaceful just as he expressed the belief that the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win the election.

However, the election has been marred by low turnout of voters.

Traders at the popular Igbudu Market were doing their businesses in Warri while commercial drivers were also operating normally.

There were scanty presence of security operatives along major roads. At about 10:57am, eligible voters were yet to come out to cast their votes for their preferred candidates in Warri South, Uvwie and the home of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Osubi, Okpe LGA.

Dailu Trust reports that the election will end by 2pm.
