A young Georgia deputy loses his life to an ambush while responding to a domestic disturbance.
Paulding County Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Cunningham lost his life last night in the line of duty. The 30-year-old deputy was responding to a home around 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening. As soon as Cunningham and another deputy exited their vehicle they were ambushed as a man in the home opened fire.
Multiple agencies then descended on the residence and an hours-long stand off ensued. Finally SWAT breached the home around 4 hours later and discovered the assailant deceased by his own hand. The woman involved in the initial disturbance also suffered from a gunshot wound. Her current condition is critical but stable.
Deputy Cunningham was rushed to the Wellstar Paulding Medical Center where he passed away from his injuries in the emergency room. Deputy Cunningham had been with the Paulding County Sheriff's office since 2020 and his death is the first death in the line of duty in the history of the office.
Sheriff Gary Gulledge announced Cunningham's passing while holding back tears and described deputy Cunningham as a great deputy and a good young man. He ended by stating, "Tonight ...we lost a hero."
Brandon Cunningham leaves behind two children and our thoughts are with his family and friends and the entire Paulding County Sheriff's department.
Statistically, we lose many police officers during domestic violence call responses. It's tragic.
