Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." A report by a United Nations group of experts in July said Rwanda exercised command and control over the rebels. Rwanda denies supporting M23 and has blamed Congolese and Burundian forces for the renewed fighting. Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Congo River Allia...

LASTMA BOSS REASSURES PUBLIC OF PROMPT RESPONSE TO TOLL-FREE CALL CENTRE INQUIRES

… Highlights Capacity Building As Top Priority

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki has reinforced the Agency’s strong commitment to delivering swift and efficient responses to all inquiries and reports received through its Toll-Free Call Centre (080000527862 /080000LASTMA).

This assurance forms part of the new management’s strategic approach to enhancing the efficiency of traffic management across Lagos State.

During an operational meeting recently at LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, Mr. Bakare-Oki addressed Zonal Heads and field officers, emphasising the critical importance of responsive communication with the motoring public. He stressed that every call received by the agency is treated with the highest level of urgency.

The Toll-Free Call Centre, which is operational daily from 8 am to 10 pm, serves as a crucial link between LASTMA and the public, enabling motorists to report incidents, seek assistance, and access real-time traffic updates.

“We are acutely aware of the challenges faced by Lagosians on our roads, particularly due to ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects by the Government. We are committed to providing timely and effective solutions. Our toll-free call centre is a vital tool in this regard, and we will continuously strive to ensure that every call is answered promptly, with the appropriate actions taken immediately”, stated Bakare-Oki.

Speaking further, the General Manager also confirmed that since the toll-free call centre’s inauguration in June 2024, the agency has received and addressed over 1,750 calls from the public. These calls have included feedback on the performance of LASTMA Officers at various traffic hotspots across the State.

In addition to improving response times, the new LASTMA management is placing a strong emphasis on capacity building within the agency. This involves comprehensive training programmes for staff at all levels to enhance their skills and ensure they are well-equipped to handle the evolving demands of traffic management in the rapidly expanding metropolis of Lagos.

“Our commitment extends beyond simply responding swiftly to public needs; we are also focused on empowering our staff with the knowledge and tools required to perform their duties effectively. Capacity building remains a top priority, and the Government is actively investing in the continuous development of our personnel to ensure they deliver the highest standards of service”, added the General Manager.

Mr. Bakare-Oki further reiterated LASTMA’s dedication to upholding its core values of integrity, professionalism, and service excellence, assuring the public that the agency will continue to strive for improvements across all aspects of its operations to better serve the people of Lagos.
