 Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years. WhatsApp chats have been encrypted since 2016, and the company began rolling out default encryption for Messenger in 2023.  PDP crisis: Ortom calls for ceasefire


The immediate past governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, on Monday, appealed to all factions in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party to sheate their swords.


In a statement issued by his media aide, Terver Akase and made available to newsmen in Makurdi, Ortom said that in politics there are bound to be differing opinions but stated that all is to deepen democracy.


The former governor said that he had shared a long-standing relationship and mutual respect with his predecessor, Gabriel Suswam.


He said,  “Chief Ortom says in politics, differing opinions and positions are inevitable, but the differences often serve to deepen the democratic process and contribute to enriching discourses within political parties.


“He points out that he and Senator Suswam share a long-standing friendship and mutual respect as leaders within the PDP and will always find amicable solutions to whatever political disagreements may arise, by prioritising the greater good of the party and its members.”


The former governor called on all stakeholders to remain committed and focus on the shared objectives and aspirations of the PDP, as they have always done.


He also commended PDP members in the 23 local government areas of the state for their peaceful conduct in the recently concluded ward congresses of the party and expected them to exhibit the same spirit during the forthcoming local government and state congresses.


“Chief Ortom further urges the party members to support the State Caretaker Committee of the party set up by the National Working Committee, to enable it to succeed in its assignment,” the statement read in part.
