Philippine Defense Chief Calls China the ‘Biggest Disruptor’ of Peace in Southeast Asia

Philippine Defence Chief Gilberto Teodoro labeled China as the “biggest disruptor” of peace in Southeast Asia during a conference hosted by the US Indo-Pacific Command on Tuesday. Teodoro’s remarks reflect the escalating tensions between Manila and Beijing over disputed reefs and waters in the South China Sea. "China… is the biggest disruptor of international peace in the ASEAN region," Teodoro stated, emphasizing the impact of China’s actions on regional stability.

Teodoro’s comments followed recent confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels, particularly near Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands. On Monday, Commodore Jay Tarriela, a spokesman for the Philippine Coast Guard, reported that two Philippine vessels were forced to abandon their mission to deliver provisions to a ship at the reef due to China’s “excessive” deployment of ships and challenging sea conditions. “We were struggling against a more powerful adversary,” Tarriela told AFP.

In response to the ongoing disputes, Teodoro urged the international community to unite against China’s “illegal acts.” “We need a collective consensus and a strong call out against China,” he said, calling for pressure on Beijing to cease its aggressive actions in the disputed waters. The conflict highlights the broader geopolitical struggle over control and sovereignty in the South China Sea.
