 Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years. WhatsApp chats have been encrypted since 2016, and the company began rolling out default encryption for Messenger in 2023. Police Exhume Bodies of Kidnapped Marine Hunters in Akwa Ibom



The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has exhumed the bodies of marine hunters from the Ministry of Internal Security and Inland Waterways who were kidnapped, murdered, and buried by notorious criminals in Unyenghe, Mbo Local Government Area. The command’s spokesperson, Timfon John, disclosed on Friday that the bodies were discovered in shallow graves after the police received information about the crime. “The command’s operatives, upon getting the information, embarked on a hot chase of the suspects and arrested the following suspects: Anthony Archibong, Emmanuel Emmanuel Otoyo, Daniel Edet Okon, Eniete Harry Tom, and Joseph Okon,” John said.


The police also arrested the Village Head of Utit Antai, Chief Okon Asuquo Eteokpo, who was allegedly providing spiritual fortification for the suspects. John added, "Chief Okon Asuquo Eteokpo, said to be their ally and spiritual fortifier, was arrested alongside the suspects, and a total of 15 live cartridges were recovered from them." According to the police statement, the bodies were found after hours of intensive searching by a combined team from the command, with the corpses buried in shallow graves and their heads dismembered.


The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reassured the public of its commitment to eradicating crime in the state. The statement urged residents to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station. “The command has again reassured members of the public of their intentional determination to rid the State of crime and criminal elements," John emphasized.
