South Carolina weightlifting teacher/coach is put on leave after questionable disciplinary tactics that resulted in multiple injuries.
According to reports an incident which occurred on August 16th left multiple football players with injuries and at least one suffering 3rd degree burns. This led to outraged parents and a police inquiry.
On that date, players from the football team were goofing around and making cat noises before weightlifting class. The teacher became upset and decided to punish the students/athletes.
He proceeded to make the entire class bear crawl and crab walk on the football field turf. The temperature was 93 degrees at that time with the surface temps of the turf being around 20 degrees hotter.
When the students complained of the heat and informed him their hands were being burned, he told them he was going to toughen up their soft hands.
After completing their punishment some players asked to get their hands wrapped before continuing with weightlifting practice. A request which some players say he denied, while others say they were able to wrap their hands.
Regardless, multiple players suffered painful burns and blisters with one student's wounds being classified as 3rd degree burns by his doctor. This caused 2 football players to miss scrimmage the next day due to their injuries.
The Lancaster County Sheriff's department spoke with student's parents and staff before speaking with the teacher in question. The incident report stated the teacher said, "he didn't realize the turf could get that hot and he had not seen the students hands". The Sheriff's office concluded he seemed remorseful and decided no charges were necessary outside of whatever disciplinary actions the school would take.
The School has placed the teacher on administrative leave and has declined to comment any further.
