Erat Village in Shock as Separatists Kill Chief and His Wife, Set Home on Fire

CAMEROON: The Erat community in Mundemba, Ndian Division, South West Region of Cameroon, is reeling from a horrifying attack by separatist fighters, commonly known as “Amba boys.” On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, the village chief and his wife were brutally murdered and their bodies burned outside their home.

In a video viewed by MMI, the couple's remains are seen engulfed in flames after they were shot and their house set ablaze. This tragic event has sparked widespread fear, with many residents fleeing for safety. Some have sought refuge in nearby bushes, while others have escaped to Nigeria, fearing further attacks as the assailants reportedly threatened to return.

The video identifies a gunman called "Adamawa" and his group as responsible for the violence, though no clear motive for the attack has been revealed.

Those who remain in the area are appealing for urgent assistance from the public and humanitarian organizations, as they lack basic necessities and feel increasingly vulnerable.

This tragic incident is part of a growing pattern of violence in Cameroon's Anglophone regions, where separatist fighters are enforcing lockdowns to prevent schools from reopening and to express opposition to the government. The ongoing conflict continues to create a climate of fear and instability, severely affecting the lives of ordinary citizens.
