Over 120 Lives Lost In Nepal as Major Floods and Landslides Devastate Communities

Major floods and landslides in Nepal have resulted in the deaths of over 120 people, with many more still missing following two days of intense rainfall. The capital, Kathmandu, has been particularly hard-hit, with residents describing harrowing escapes as they "jumped from one roof to another" to avoid rising waters that inundated thousands of homes. Rescue operations are ongoing, utilizing helicopters and inflatable rafts, although major roads remain blocked, complicating efforts.

As of Sunday, more than 3,000 individuals have been rescued, but flash floods and landslides have caused significant casualties. Among the victims were five people, including a pregnant woman and a four-year-old girl, who died when a house collapsed in Bhaktapur. In another tragic incident, six football players lost their lives at a training center in Makwanpur due to a landslide. Eyewitness accounts highlight the desperation of those caught in the floods, with one witness recalling how four individuals pleaded for help as they were swept away by the Nakkhu River.

The Nepalese government has mobilized around 10,000 police officers and military personnel to assist with search and rescue efforts. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and have banned nighttime driving in the Kathmandu valley due to safety concerns. Schools have been closed for three days as a precautionary measure, while air travel has also been disrupted with many domestic flights canceled or delayed.
