NANS DENIES CLAIMS OF ORGANIZING NATIONWIDE PROTESTS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refuted claims of organizing a protest against the recent increase in petrol prices.

This denial follows the dissemination of a purported statement from the association, announcing plans for a widespread shutdown of major cities in response to the petrol price hike.

According to the statement, the group intended to commence protests across major cities in the country from September 15, 2024, and also demanded the reversal of the petrol price increase, as well as the removal of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

In response, NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, has dismissed the statement as false, urging security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the source of the misinformation.

Akinteye emphasized, "We strongly urge the public, the media, and all stakeholders to disregard these false reports. The individuals or groups behind these rumours are faceless entities who seek to exploit the name of NANS for their malicious purposes. They aim to destabilize the country and create unnecessary tension among citizens. We categorically disassociate ourselves from any such plans or intentions."

Furthermore, he urged security agencies to take decisive action in identifying and holding accountable those responsible for spreading these falsehoods.

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students through peaceful, lawful, and constructive channels.

“NANS remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We will continue to pursue this mission through peaceful, lawful, and constructive channels. Let it be known that NANS stands firmly for peace, progress, and the unity of our nation”, he said.
