A Texas woman sadly goes fully blind in one eye after parasites invade her eye due to swimming in contact lenses.

23-year-old Brooklyn McCasland contracted acanthamoeba keratitis while visiting friends in Alabama. While on vacation she went swimming and soon after started having signs of an eye infection.

However due to the fact that AK mimics common eye infections in early stages, Brooklyn was misdiagnosed for a period of time, giving the parasites time to burrow in. AK is very rare and 90% of cases are in contact lens users.

Brooklyn was in increasingly more pain and eventually went completely blind in her right eye even though she was visiting eye doctors 3 times a week.

Finally, a test result revealed the true culprit but it's so rare the treatments are only made in the UK. Luckily, the office in Dallas had some samples of the treatment and Brooklyn was able to start treatments.

The process is slow and she has to use drops every 30 minutes. There is still a chance that she will need a cornea transplant and could possibly lose her eye if they can't get the condition under control soon.

Brooklyn wishes she had never swam in contacts and warns others about the dangers. Contacts cause minor corneal abrasions which is perfect for AK to take up residence.

We hope that Brooklyn recovers as best as she can. We appreciate her coming forward to warn others of this rare infection.
