Edo Government: E-Governance Platform Managed by Unknown Non-State Actors

The Edo State Government has revealed that the state’s e-governance platform, introduced by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, is being operated by unidentified non-state actors or consultants.

Governor Monday Okpebholo made the announcement while directing an urgent review of the platform.

A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, on November 25, 2024, explained that no official within Edo State’s public service has administrative control over the platform.

Ikhilor expressed concerns that the platform’s operation by external parties posed a significant data security risk, as it exposed the state’s governance system to the influence of non-state actors or consultants. He emphasized the need for an immediate review of the platform’s operations.

The statement clarified, "Reports circulating that the Senator Monday Okpebholo-led administration has shut down the e-governance platform initiated by the previous administration are false. However, it has come to our attention that the platform is being managed from the backend by unknown non-state actors, with no oversight or administrative control from any state official. This situation is a serious data security concern, placing the state’s entire governance structure at the mercy of these external parties. Therefore, a review is necessary."

To address the issue, Governor Okpebholo has ordered a comprehensive review of the e-governance platform to ensure that the Edo State government gains full administrative control and restores institutional memory, which is currently lacking.

While the review is ongoing, all staff and officials of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are instructed to continue using the platform until further notice.

The statement also sought to clarify misinformation circulating on social media, asserting that the platform has not been shut down by the state government.
