Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported.  Power Disconnection Hits UCH: Patients and Relatives Struggle as Electricity Supply is Cut Off Again

Patients and their families at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan are enduring severe hardship following the latest power disconnection by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). This marks the second time this year the hospital has faced a power cut, with the latest disruption occurring on October 26, 2024, due to an outstanding debt.

Previously, UCH’s power supply was cut off in March 2024 over a N495 million debt, but it was restored after intervention from prominent Ibadan indigenes and stakeholders. Despite an agreement to settle the debt in installments, IBEDC claims that UCH has failed to honor its commitment, resulting in the new disconnection.

As a result, critical services at the hospital, including surgeries, laboratory tests, and water supply, have been halted. Staff members revealed that the hospital owes over N200 million in accumulated bills. Many patients have been forced to seek treatment elsewhere due to the ongoing power issues.

IBEDC spokesperson Busola Tunwase confirmed that the hospital had reneged on its agreement to pay off the debt. Despite repeated attempts, UCH’s Public Relations Officer, Funmi Adetuyibi, has not responded to requests for comment.

Families of affected patients expressed frustration, with some opting to transfer their relatives to other hospitals due to the lack of essential services.
