The World Trade Organization (WTO) has reappointed Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term, effective September 1, 2025.

The announcement was made by the WTO on Friday via a post on X. The General Council confirmed the reappointment after reaching a consensus, recognizing Okonjo-Iweala's exceptional leadership and strategic vision for the organization’s future.

The reappointment process, which began on October 8, 2024, was led by Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council. With no other nominations received by the November 8 deadline, Okonjo-Iweala was the sole candidate.

The General Council commended Okonjo-Iweala for her outstanding leadership, particularly in navigating global economic challenges and achieving significant milestones at the 12th and 13th Ministerial Conferences.

Okonjo-Iweala first took office as WTO Director-General on March 1, 2021, becoming the first woman and the first African to hold the position. Her first term is set to conclude on August 31, 2025.
