Doctors Warn Americans of Quadruple Viral Threat
This winter, Americans face four simultaneous viral threats: the flu, COVID-19, norovirus (stomach flu), and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus).
Doctors fear a rise in hospitalizations due to low booster vaccine uptake for COVID-19 this year. Hospitals are preparing for a potential surge in patients.
Flu vaccination rates are also low. While the recommended protection level is 70%, only about 35% of American adults have received a flu shot.
None of the four viruses have peaked yet. Experts predict outbreaks between January and March, especially as people travel by plane during the holiday season.
Hospitalization rates for viral infections rose by 14% in the week of December 1-7, reaching 3.3% of all hospital admissions. Two weeks prior, the rate was 2.9%.
Louisiana and Georgia currently have the highest infection rates in the United States.
