Edo Assembly Suspends Local Council Chairpersons Over Alleged Misconduct

The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended the chairpersons and vice chairpersons of all 18 local governments for two months due to alleged insubordination and gross misconduct. The decision, made during a plenary session on Tuesday, followed a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The suspension stems from the council leaders’ failure to submit their financial records as instructed by the governor. On December 3, Governor Okpebholo had given the chairpersons 48 hours to provide their financial statements from September 2023 onward to the Edo State Assets Verification Committee. He described their non-compliance as insubordination and gross misconduct, prompting his request for the House to take action.

In the resolution, the House also mandated that the leaders of the legislative arms in the local governments assume control of the councils during the suspension period.

The motion for suspension was introduced by Isibor Adeh (APC, Esan North East 1) and seconded by Donald Okogbe (PDP, Akoko-Edo II). After a debate, the Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, called for a vote, which saw 14 members in favor, 6 opposed, and 3 abstentions.
