The Amawbia Community in Awka South LGA, Anambra State has elected a new President General (PG), marking a significant milestone in their community development.

The election took place on December 30 at Eziokpaligwe, Amawbia Town Square.

Nze Chukwukadibia Odumodu emerged the new President General (PG), polling 371 votes to defeat two other contenders, Mr Patrick Muo, who had 302 votes and the third contestant, Rtd Air Commodore Ify Udoka Menuba, who polled 47 votes.

Other elected positions are Hon. Emeka Nworah, Deputy PG; Mr Anayo Oyekwe, Treasurer-General; Engr. Nzube Menuba, Auditor 1; Chinedu Nonyelu, Auditor 2; Ginikanwa Orji, Auditor 3; and Chukwuma Uyanwune as Auditor 4.

The election, which was keenly contested and supervised by officials from Anambra State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs led by Commissioner Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, and security agencies followed the expiration of tenure of office and Amawbia Community called for the election of new executive to pilot affairs of the community over the next three years.

The Commissioner commended Ndi Amawbia for conducting a peaceful election exercise, which demonstrates their commitment to maintaining harmony and stability.

"This achievement is in line with the Anambra State Government's emphasis on peace building and development in local communities. The government has been encouraging community leaders to prioritize peaceful resolution of conflicts and work toward the betterment of their areas.

"The successful election of the new PG is a testament to the community's ability to come together and make collective decisions that promote their well-being. As Commissioner Nwabunwanne noted, the rule of law practice has contributed significantly to restoring peace in Anambra State and I thank the stakeholders, especially the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Chukwuma Pius Okoye, son of the soil, for seeing to the peaceful conduct of the election."

Some community stakeholders including Rt. Hon Okoye, Deputy Speaker and member representing Awka South II Constituency and Chief Celestine Anere, MD Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, said that Mr Governor had taught them how to do free, fair elections and Amawbia always lead by example, noting that the election was free, fair and transparent without agitation.

Barr. Harry Uduh, Ozonkpu Eddy Nwokoye, and Engr. Ezekiel Nwokoye, emphasized the significance of the recent election of a new PG in Amawbia. With the current absence of a traditional ruler, the PG will serve as the next ranking officer, representing the community until a substantive Okpaligwe is appointed.

They stressed the importance of electing a credible and trustworthy PG, who will carry everyone along and work for the benefit of the entire community, rather than just a select few. They also encouraged the incoming PG to take necessary steps toward selecting a new Okpaligwe and urged those with ongoing court cases to withdraw them in the interest of community harmony.

Sir Jachike Nwankwo, Sir Augustine Nnamah and Nze Uche Okonkwo, noted that the election was seamless and transparent, urging all to rally support to the PG, explaining that Amawbia is very central and strategic in the government of Anambra State not just as part of the capital territory but landlord to the state governor and we do not want to abuse that privilege. "It will be a shame on us if we cannot use our resources and capabilities to sustain what our great great great grandfathers handed to us".

Comrade Chukwunenye Nwalusi, Chairman Amawbia Youth Vanguard and Mayor Awka South ASATU Youth was overwhelmed with the conduct of the election, seeing it as the best election so far, advising the PG to carry everyone along, praying for peace, progress of the community, even as he asked God to give the PG more wisdom to pilot the affairs of the community.

Nze Odumodu, the newly elected President General of Amawbia, pledged to unite the community and tackle its challenges. He plans to achieve this through a town hall meeting, where he will bring together fractional groups to iron out their differences and work toward a common goal.

His commitment to forgiveness and unity is inspiring, as evident from his decision to forgive those who blackmailed him on social media, calling on everyone to join hands in lifting the community forward, expressing gratitude to government officials, security agencies, and all who monitored the election.

The Electoral Committee Chairman, Mr Akonam Okongwu thanked God and Ndi Amawbia for the peaceful, and transparent election, praying that Amawbia will continue to boom, moving from strength to strength.
