Impeached South Korean President Faces Potential Arrest as Deadline Approaches
Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is on the brink of avoiding arrest as the deadline for a warrant approaches, following anti-corruption investigators’ request for more time to enforce the arrest. Yoon, who has refused questioning three times regarding a controversial martial law decree last month, remains holed up in his residence, guarded by hundreds of personnel.
Investigators have sought an extension for the warrant, which is set to expire on Monday at 3 PM GMT. They have also requested police support to assist in the operation. Police have indicated their willingness to help and warned that anyone obstructing the arrest could face detention.
During a failed attempt to enter Yoon's presidential compound on Friday, investigators encountered heavy security, and authorities have even considered arresting members of the Presidential Security Service during a second attempt.
Yoon's opposition has called for the dismantling of the security service protecting him. If arrested, Yoon would be the first sitting president in South Korean history to face such a situation, with authorities then having 48 hours to either apply for another warrant or release him.
Yoon faces serious charges, including insurrection, for briefly suspending civilian rule, which could result in imprisonment or even the death penalty if convicted. However, Yoon and his supporters remain defiant, with protests outside his residence and calls to resist the arrest.
Yoon's legal team has described the warrant as "unlawful" and vowed further legal challenges. The situation has sparked a constitutional crisis in South Korea, with the future of the presidency hanging in the balance. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Seoul, but his visit was overshadowed by North Korea's missile launch. Yoon's impeachment trial is scheduled for January 14, and if he refuses to attend, the trial will proceed in his absence.
