In a swift move to fulfill his promise, the Mayor of Onitsha North LGA, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, led a team on January 23 to restore order at the Ani Onicha Shrine, a sacred heritage site for the Onitsha people.

The follow-up visit, which included cabinet members, security personnel, and traffic officers, came just a day after Mayor Nwora’s unscheduled inspection of the site.

Traders at the location had complied with his directive to cease all commercial activities, acknowledging the shrine’s cultural and spiritual significance.

However, upon arrival, the Mayor expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the environment and ordered an immediate cleanup, which was swiftly carried out.

As part of measures to preserve the sanctity of Ani Onicha, Mayor Nwora announced a ban on trading, standing, vehicle parking, bus loading, and passenger drop-offs within the shrine’s vicinity.

During the visit, Barr. Abada Iwuchukwu, an Amsterdam-based businessman and indigene of Onitsha, expressed concern over the shrine’s desecration, saying that such disregard would not be tolerated. “This behavior is unheard of in other communities,” he emphasized.

Dr. Obidi Ifejika, Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Mayor, reiterated the administration’s commitment to protecting Ani Onicha’s sacredness. “Ani Onicha is a holy ground, and trading here is unacceptable. We are here to enforce the restoration of its dignity,” he declared.

Accompanying the Mayor were several key officials, including Hon. Ejiofor Egwuatu (LGA Secretary), Hon. Tagbo Emodi (Chief of Staff), and Supervisory Councillors Hon. Nnamdi Micheal Melifonwu (Works), Hon. Andrew Chike Nwanosike (Health), and Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Ezediniru (Environment), among others.

The visit underscores the administration’s commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of Onitsha North while ensuring law and order in the community.
