Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." A report by a United Nations group of experts in July said Rwanda exercised command and control over the rebels. SOWORE GRANTED BAIL, REJECTS 'UNREASONABLE CONDITIONS'. (PHOTO).

Sowore granted bail, rejects ‘unreasonable conditions’

Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed that he has been granted bail following an engagement with the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja on Monday.

Sowore, however, stated he would refuse any bail conditions that he deems compromising to his “innocence, dignity, and integrity.”

PUNCH Online reports that the activist was summoned to address several allegations, including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, cyberstalking, and acts allegedly intended to prevent arrests.

He, however, in a statement on X.com on Monday, alleged he is being targeted for his public criticism of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure extension.

He also alleged that the plan of the police “is to detain me and take me to Lagos for a kangaroo trial.”

In a subsequent post, Sowore stated that the Deputy Inspector-General of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, informed him of the bail offer pending the conclusion of an “investigation.”

He wrote, “The DIG of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, at the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja had just informed me that he has instructed his personnel to grant me bail, pending the conclusion of the “investigation”.

“I have also advised the DIG that in accepting “bail”, I will not agree to conditions that compromise my innocence, dignity, and integrity.

“If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court, even then I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the PoliceNG hierarchy.”
