Taraba Community Demands Removal of Area Court Judge Over Alleged Misconduct

Residents of Doorshima community in Ibi Local Government Area, Taraba State, have urged the State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Filibus Agya, to urgently remove Grade I Area Court Judge, Justice Saidu Muhammad, over allegations of harassment and intimidation.

Speaking in Jalingo, the community spokesperson, Istifanus Moses, accused the judge of colluding with others to unlawfully seize fish ponds legally owned by the Doorshima community under the Sarkin Kudu Chiefdom.

The community claims the judge ignored directives from the National and Taraba State Boundary Commissions, as well as the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, which affirmed the original River Benue demarcation.

On January 11, 2025, the judge allegedly ordered the detention of the Ward Head of Doorshima, Mallam Ibrahim, who was only released after the intervention of Ibi Local Government Chairman, Iliya Jibu.

Residents accuse the judge of issuing arrest warrants and detentions as intimidation tactics, asserting his actions are influenced by powerful individuals from Ibi Chiefdom.

Judge Saidu Muhammad, however, denied the allegations, stating that he acted on a complaint from Alih Buhari regarding disputed fish ponds. He added that the arrests were for contempt of court following the community’s refusal to honor court summonses.
