 Atiku pledges scholarship to viral Niger teen miner Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said his “heart breaks” each time he watches a viral video of a teenage artisanal miner, Yusuf Aliyu, speaking at a mining site in Niger State after the deaths of 37 miners in the state. Atiku, in a statement posted on his X handle, said he was prepared to support the boy’s education, describing him as a child whose intelligence and confidence should be nurtured in a classroom rather than by working at a mining site. “I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks. A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty. “I cannot look at him and see an ‘illegal miner.’ I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him. I see brilliance trapped by poverty and enormous promise abandoned by leadership,” ...

 Vandals Steal TCN Underground Cables in Abuja

 

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported another incident of vandalism targeting power infrastructure in Abuja, resulting in widespread electricity disruption.

In a statement signed by its Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, the company revealed that vandals attacked the 132kV transmission line and underground cable supplying bulk power to the Central Area transmission substation, Katampe, in Abuja’s Central Area, during the early hours of Friday.


“This attack on transmission lines has affected electricity supply to Maitama, Wuse, and Garki,” the statement read.


The incident disrupted power distribution across eight feeders servicing the Central Area, cutting over 60% of electricity supply to the capital.


TCN expressed frustration over the recurring vandalism of critical power infrastructure, which continues to impede electricity delivery nationwide.


Mbah disclosed that a team of engineers had been dispatched to the site to repair the damage and restore power to the affected areas. She urged residents to remain patient as efforts to fix the vandalized cables were underway.


“The vandalism occurred near Menillum Park in Abuja, where unknown individuals stole 40 meters of 1x500mm conductor from two 132kV transmission lines,” Mbah stated.


The affected areas include Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.


Mbah appealed to the public to remain vigilant and protect transmission infrastructure from further attacks.


In 2024, the federal government reported spending ₦8.8 billion to repair 128 vandalized electricity towers nationwide between January and November.
