Boundary Dispute: Abia Community Protests Akwa Ibom's Road Construction

Residents of Azumini Ndoki in Abia State took to the streets on Monday to protest the Akwa Ibom State government's road construction project in their community, alleging that it's being carried out without a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two states.¹

The protesters claimed that the project, which connects Ikot Esu-Otomo in Akwa-Ibom State to Uzonta road in Azumini Ndoki, is an attempt by the Akwa-Ibom State government to expand its territory and encroach on Abia State's land. Community leaders, including Ogbo Ubani and Azubuike Nwankwo, condemned Akwa-Ibom State's actions, citing the community's long-standing boundary dispute.

The protesters also expressed concerns that the Akwa-Ibom State government is revoking properties in Abia State and paying compensation, which they believe is the responsibility of the Abia State government. They demanded an immediate halt to the project until an MoU is signed between the two states.

In response, the Mayor of Ukwa-East, Chibunna Akara, urged the community to remain calm and promised to convey their concerns to Governor Alex Otti for a peaceful resolution.
