Kano Assembly Defends Governor’s Decision to Extend Service for Key Officials

The Kano State House of Assembly has defended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s authority to extend the service tenure of civil servants beyond the statutory 60 years of age or 35 years of service, citing civil service regulations.

The Assembly’s Public Relations Secretary, Kamaluddin Sani Shawai, addressed concerns raised in a January 6 letter from Barrister Usman Dan Abdullo, who urged the Assembly to challenge the governor’s decision to grant two-year extensions to several officials, including the State House of Assembly Accountant, the Head of Civil Service, and judiciary staff.

Shawai clarified that such extensions have occurred before and, despite opposition and legal challenges, the government remains firm on its stance.

Meanwhile, Barrister Dan Abdullo argued that the governor’s decision violates the Nigerian Constitution and the National Labor Act.
