 COURTESY VISIT BY THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE ON DRUGS AND CRIME FOR GLOBAL MARITIME COOPERATION PROGRAMME TO NAVAL HEADQUARTERS


On Friday 7 March 2025, The Team Lead of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for Global Maritime Cooperation Programme (UNODC/GMCP) and the Danish Defence Advisor to Nigeria, Navy Captain Soren Skovbjerg Nielsen paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla who was represented by the Chief of Training (COT), Rear Admiral CE Atebi at Naval Headquarters, Abuja.


The Team Lead stated that the visit was aimed at evaluating the engagements within the framework of Denmark's effort to strengthen Maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea by enhancing the capabilities of regional and national maritime law enforcement institutions. He also opined that this will continue to engage the NN in the area of Training, Operations and Exercises in order to enhance the implementation of the project activities under UNODC and the Danish Maritime Security Initiative.  


In his response, the COT welcomed the Leader of the Team and the Danish Defence Advisor to Nigeria and further thanked them for the visit. Furthermore, the COT stated that the CNS appreciates the team for the cooperation and partnership so far and highlighted areas of support and partnership that could be improved in the future. Lastly, he noted that the Nigerian Navy had successfully eliminated piracy threats in Nigerian waters hence the need for states within the Gulf of Guinea region to increase their operational capabilities in the region.
