 Avery the Poke Kid, 12-year-old social media star, dies 7 years after pancreatic cancer diagnosis Avery, known online as “Avery the Poke Kid,” has passed away at age 12 after a long battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. His parents, Christian Garcia and Rebecca Rosa-Valentin, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, explaining that although Avery had recently entered hospice care, they believed they still had more time with him.  They described spending his final moments together in a hospital rooftop garden, holding him close as he took his last breath.  ERADICATING SGBV:  DSVA ENGAGES RELIGIOUS LEADERS 


As part of efforts to stem the tide of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the State, the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has recently conducted a sensitisation programme for 84 religious leaders from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Onigbongbo and Ijede Local Government Areas of Lagos State 


The two-day programme, facilitated by Mr. Oluwadamilare Adewusi, Head of the Community Engagement Unit, aimed to equip religious leaders with knowledge on issues surrounding Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), effective reporting systems and their roles in helping survivors find justice.


Mr. Adewusi delivered a comprehensive presentation on SGBV, emphasising the importance of religious leaders encouraging open discussions among their congregation about their experiences of victimization and reporting cases of domestic violence to the Lagos DSVA.


The programme focused on the role of religious leaders as a connection between the community and formal reporting systems. Participants were charged to operate as a bridge between their congregation and the formal report system, ensuring that survivors receive the necessary support and obtain justice.


The programme concluded with Reverend Kolawole Peter, CAN Chairman of Ijede Local Government reaffirming the religious leaders' commitment to combating SGBV in Lagos State. 


Participants also committed the toll-free helpline number, 0800-333-333, to memory in case of emergency.


This two-day sensitization programme underscores the Agency's dedication to raising awareness and encouraging reporting of SGBV cases, a commitment reaffirmed by the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi.
