SENATE POSTPONES DEBATE ON RIVERS STATE EMERGENCY RULE UNTIL THURSDAY. (PHOTO).

The Nigerian Senate suspended its plenary session on Wednesday, announcing that the debate on President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State will now take place on Thursday.

The postponement came after a two-hour delay in the commencement of the plenary, as many senators had not taken their seats. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who sponsored the motion, moved to step it down until Thursday, citing Order 1(b) of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (as amended). The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro.

The motion expresses concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Rivers State, citing threats from militants and incidents of oil pipeline vandalism. To approve the declaration, the Senate requires a two-thirds majority (73 out of 109 senators).

However, there are fears that the Senate may not meet this requirement on Thursday. The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, put the postponement to a voice vote, which was approved by many senators.
