China Warns U.S. Tariffs Could Spark Humanitarian Crisis in Developing Nations
China's Commerce Minister, Wang Wentao, has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating trade tensions between the United States and China. In a recent video call with World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Wang expressed deep concern that the U.S.'s increasing tariffs on Chinese goods could have devastating effects on developing countries, potentially leading to a humanitarian crisis.
Wang emphasized that the U.S.'s "reciprocal tariffs" would inflict serious harm on developing nations, especially the least developed countries. He stated that these measures introduce significant uncertainty and instability into the global economy, causing chaos both internationally and within the United States itself.
This warning comes in the wake of President Donald Trump's decision to raise tariffs on Chinese imports to a staggering 145%, citing a lack of respect from China. In retaliation, China has increased its tariffs on U.S. goods to 125%. The tit-for-tat tariff increases have raised concerns about a potential global economic downturn, with economists warning of rising inflation and the risk of recession.
The escalating trade war between the U.S. and China is not just a bilateral issue; it has far-reaching implications for the global economy, particularly for developing nations.
China's warning about a potential humanitarian crisis underscores the severity of the situation.
