Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued an apology to Lagos residents who were stranded in traffic for hours due to repair work on the Independence Bridge.

The bridge's closure on Wednesday evening resulted in a massive gridlock that lasted until early Thursday, leaving thousands of commuters stuck in the area.

Videos and photos of the stranded commuters went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism.

In response, Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the site on Thursday morning to inspect the repair work and apologized for the inconvenience caused.

"I want to start by apologizing to all Lagosians for the difficult traffic situation we experienced in the last 24 hours," Sanwo-Olu said, accompanied by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, and other officials.

The governor acknowledged that more could have been done to communicate with residents about the repair work and its potential impact on traffic.
