 Malian army withdraws from key Tessalit military camp: sources Mali’s army and its Russian mercenary allies have surrendered Camp Tessalit, a strategic military post in the north, multiple sources told the AFP news agency on Friday. An official from the Tuareg-led separatist group claimed soldiers and mercenaries at the camp had "surrendered", following a fierce fight over the weekend. Simultaneous attacks in Mali by militants linked to Al Qaeda and separatist Tuareg rebels on April 25 showed how fighters ​from different groups with different goals were able to strike at the heart of the West African country's military government. Gunfire and explosions were reported in the capital Bamako and around a large military base outside the capital, as well as Gao and central areas, as gunfire continuing in the northern city of Kidal.   Husband of Late Gospel Singer Osinachi Sentenced to Death for Culpable Homicide


Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging for culpable homicide in connection with her death on April 8, 2022.


The court found Nwachukwu guilty after the prosecution, led by the Office of the Attorney-General of themedia, successfully proved its case. Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide punishable by death, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and spousal battery.


During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, who testified as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses, and tendered 25 documents as exhibits. Nwachukwu testified in his defense, called four additional witnesses, and submitted four exhibits.


Before sentencing, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency, while prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to uphold the law. Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on the first count of culpable homicide. Additionally, he received two-year imprisonment terms for each of seven other counts, a six-month term for one count, a three-year term for another, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for two counts.
