Senate President Godswill Akpabio has advised second-term governors to exercise caution in selecting their successors, warning against choosing candidates based solely on displays of loyalty. Speaking on Saturday at the commissioning of the first 30 kilometers of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Lekki, Lagos, Akpabio cautioned that prioritizing subservience over competence could lead to betrayal and poor governance.
Addressing governors, particularly those from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akpabio emphasized the importance of visionary leadership. “Do not give power to anybody who is not prepared,” he said. “Don’t choose someone just because they are subservient or their wife is rolling on the floor. If you do that, you are giving power to someone unprepared for governance, and they will disappoint you. This is where betrayals normally start.”
Akpabio praised President Bola Tinubu, who was present at the event, as a leader with “both sight and vision,” urging governors to emulate this standard. He specifically addressed second-term governors, including Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), who attended the commissioning alongside Works Minister Dave Umahi.
The Senate President’s remarks, which sparked discussions on X, underscore growing concerns about political succession in Nigeria, with many users commending his call for merit-based leadership. As second-term governors prepare to exit office, Akpabio’s advice highlights the need for strategic choices to ensure sustainable development and political stability.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, a flagship infrastructure initiative, was hailed as a testament to visionary governance, with Akpabio urging state leaders to align with such forward-thinking policies. Further reactions from governors and political stakeholders are anticipated as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
