Former Governor Urges Tinubu to Settle ₦45bn Debt Owed to MKO Abiola’s Family

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has called on President Bola Tinubu to pay the ₦45 billion debt owed by the Nigerian government to the family of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Speaking at the public presentation of his book, Being True To Myself, in Abuja on Tuesday, Lamido described the debt as a critical step to closing the chapter on the June 12 saga. Addressing the Minister of Information, who represented President Tinubu, Lamido said, “Please tell him to pay Abiola’s family the ₦45 billion. When this money is paid, the chapter of June 12 will be closed.”

Lamido cited former President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, who reportedly confirmed Abiola’s election victory and disclosed the ₦45 billion debt. “Abiola is double punished. He was not given the presidency, and he is being owed,” Lamido stated.

The event also saw Lamido express gratitude to key figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he described as his “Boss, Guide, Leader, and Inspiration” for his presence and contribution to the book’s foreword. He also thanked General Abdulsalami Abubakar for his service, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for promoting religious harmony, and Dr. Iyorchia Ayu for reviewing the book.

Lamido commended the editorial and organizing teams for their efforts and the media for generating nationwide interest in his book. He concluded by thanking Allah for sparing the lives of those present to witness the occasion.
