I’ve Not Taken A Single Loan In Two Years - Gov. Uba Sani

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has revealed that since assuming office two years ago, he has not taken a single loan from either local or international financial institutions.

The governor made the disclosure during a Hausa-language interview with select Kaduna-based broadcast journalists, held as part of activities marking his second anniversary in office.

He said several banks had approached his administration with various loan offers, but he declined them to avoid plunging the state into further debt.

Governor Sani noted that his government had instead adopted stringent cost-cutting measures, including slashing allowances and perks for top officials such as the Secretary to the State Government and Commissioners, to maintain a lean and efficient administration.

“The Secretary to the State Government is a retired federal Permanent Secretary and a former consultant with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Many of my commissioners also came from well-paying jobs,” he said.

“I persuaded them to give up performance bonuses and continue using the official vehicles inherited from the previous administration. That’s how we’ve managed to run the government effectively without resorting to loans,” he added.

The governor further explained that he leveraged his connections built over the years as a human rights activist and Senator to attract grants from donor organisations.

He cited Qatar Charity’s involvement in major infrastructure projects, including the Kaduna Economic City and a mass housing scheme at Millennium City, which he said is nearing completion.

Governor Sani also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for extending financial support to Kaduna State, alongside other states across the country, to help manage economic challenges.
