The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is on schedule for completion by January 2026. The minister disclosed this during an inspection tour of the project on Wednesday, accompanied by financial backers from the Dutch Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
“We came to review the project with the financial promoters, and I assure you that by January next year, God willing, we will have this road completed,” Umahi stated.
Umahi expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, commending Hitech Construction Company for its high-quality work. He highlighted the technical excellence of the highway’s design, noting that the concrete thickness exceeds the required 275 millimeters, with the contractor using 280 millimeters. The minister also praised the Department of Bridge and Roads and the Controller of Works in Lagos for their commitment.
However, Umahi raised concerns about potential safety risks, warning that motorists attempting to access the highway directly from nearby residences could cause accidents. “It is going to be a very serious issue, so we have to design a barrier,” he said, noting that while a retaining wall is in place, it does not cover the entire stretch. He emphasized that, as a superhighway, the road should only be accessed via flyovers and interchanges to prevent congestion.
The financial promoters reportedly expressed confidence in the project’s progress, quality, and construction methods, reinforcing optimism about its timely completion.
