The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Tinubu, has directed the Attorney General of the Federation to bolster legislation targeting individuals who steal government assets under the cover of night. The move aims to curb the rising activities of scrap metal vendors, miners, and cart pushers involved in pilfering critical public infrastructure.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the decision following Monday’s closed-door FEC meeting. He highlighted growing concerns over the theft of metals from roads, bridges, and other public assets, which are often sold and recycled back into the market.
“The federal government is mulling the possibility of criminalizing this act,” Idris told reporters. “While some laws already exist, the Attorney General has been tasked with reviewing them in depth to address this escalating issue.”
The government noted a surge in such thefts, particularly at night, and is determined to implement stricter measures to protect public assets and mitigate these illicit activities.
