WHY FILLING STATIONS ARE CLOSED IN MAKURDI

29th May, 2025

I’ve just been briefed on the situation surrounding the widespread closure of filling stations across Makurdi. It appears the shutdown stems from a dispute between the Ministry of Trade & Industry, the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), and several fuel stations particularly NZE Oil over issues related to tax renewal and compliance.

Reports indicate that NZE Oil refused to comply with a tax payment demand, going as far as breaking the BIRS seal placed on its premises. In response, the association representing filling station operators allegedly threatened a statewide shutdown unless their detained staff member was released. They also escalated the matter to their national and affiliate bodies, even as discussions for an amicable resolution were ongoing at the police station.

Let me be clear, if this account is accurate, it is wholly unacceptable for any group to hold an entire state to ransom over non payment of tax or a public commodity  especially one that serves as a lifeline to everyday citizens and generates income for the business operators themselves.

This matter must be resolved immediately to end the unnecessary hardship being inflicted on the people of Makurdi. The suffering is real and must not be prolonged.
