Wike Declares Fubara His ‘Son,’ Targets Political Foes in Rivers Crisis

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has described suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as his “political son,” clarifying that his ongoing feud is not with Fubara but with those allegedly manipulating the governor against him. Speaking in an interview on Saturday, Wike vowed to defeat those he accused of trying to “steal what they did not work for.”

“He (Fubara) is my boy, my son. Why would I fight him? I’m fighting those pushing him, who are now ashamed because they are being defeated,” Wike stated, addressing the political crisis that has rocked Rivers State since 2023. The minister’s comments follow reports that Fubara, suspended by President Bola Tinubu after a state of emergency was declared in Rivers, had apologized to Wike, his former political mentor.

Wike, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaffirmed his commitment to the party despite working under Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. Dismissing calls to leave the PDP, he said, “I built this house; I won’t vacate it. Those threatening me can’t even deliver three percent of votes for their party.” He specifically called out South-East PDP leaders, including former governors Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu, accusing them of issuing empty threats despite their lack of political influence.

The minister also ruled out running for president in 2027 against Tinubu, stating, “I’m working with him. Why would I contest against him? He would win.”
