GWER WEST COUNCIL BANS SCRAP IRON DEALERS OVER SECURITY CONCERNS

8th June, 2025

In a decisive move to curb rising insecurity, the Gwer West Local Government Council has announced an immediate ban on the activities of scrap iron vendors, popularly known as "iron condemn dealers," across the area.

The directive was issued by the Executive Chairman of the Council, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, who emphasized that the decision is part of strategic efforts to restore peace and order in the region, which has witnessed increasing security challenges.

According to the Chairman, any individual found operating as a scrap iron dealer—especially those transporting materials from displaced communities or within township areas—will be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The statement, signed by Timothy Ajieje, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Executive Chairman, further urged residents of Gwer West to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activities related to scrap iron collection to the appropriate authorities.

“This measure is aimed at safeguarding lives and property. We call on all security agencies and community members to support the enforcement of this directive,” the statement read.

Gwer West is one of several local government areas in Benue State grappling with the effects of herdsmen attacks.
