Defection Drama: Akwa Ibom Governor Faces Backlash Over Plan to Join APC

A heated scene unfolded at a town hall meeting in Ikot Abasi on Wednesday when Governor Umo Eno announced his intention to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), only to be met with a resounding “No!” from the crowd.

Speaking at the Town Square Meeting with the Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, Governor Eno revealed he had conducted extensive consultations and believed “it is time to move” to align Akwa Ibom with the ruling party at the federal level. “We’re progressively moving forward, linking Akwa Ibom to the center. Are you going with us?” he asked. The audience’s overwhelming rejection drowned out a few affirmative responses, creating tension at the Ikot Abasi Local Government Grounds.

Undeterred, Eno pressed his case, arguing that defection was necessary for Akwa Ibom to “belong and be counted” in national politics and to support President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio ahead of the 2027 elections. “I’ve gone round to consult… The time has come that we will move,” he stated. “Do not be afraid. Believe in us. Believe in President Bola Tinubu because the future is bright.”

Eno warned that remaining a minority state could marginalize Akwa Ibom further, stating, “If we start breaking ourselves into pieces, we become a minority of the minorities and cannot get anything.” He stressed the need for unity across party lines to ensure that he, Tinubu, and Akpabio return to office in 2027.

The governor’s announcement and the crowd’s fierce opposition have sparked intense debate about the political future of Akwa Ibom State.
