Gunmen Attack Near Abia State University Leaves Motorcyclist Dead

A tragic shooting incident outside Abia State University (ABSU) in Uturu claimed the life of a commercial motorcyclist, Mr. Osinachi Asonye, on Friday, prompting the university to reassure students and the public of its safety.

In a statement issued by Mr. Chijioke Nwogu, the university’s Public Relations Officer, ABSU clarified that the attack occurred outside the campus, refuting false reports suggesting the incident took place within the university premises. The management condemned the killing and other related crimes, describing claims of insecurity on campus as deliberate attempts to tarnish the institution’s reputation.

“The public should note that none of these reported incidents happened inside the University, as many false narratives try to portray, but mostly in bordering communities,” the statement read, highlighting that such incidents reflect broader national security challenges rather than issues specific to ABSU or Abia State.

The university urged students to continue their academic activities without fear while advising them to avoid night travel and activities that could lead to conflicts with unpredictable outcomes. ABSU emphasized that the safety of its students remains a top priority for both the university and Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Government and security agencies have launched efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack, according to the university. ABSU reassured the public that its campus remains a safe and conducive environment for learning.
